In the heart of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the tech community mourns the loss of two brilliant minds, Tariq Thabet and Mai Ubeid. These individuals, dedicated to fostering technological advancements in the region, were tragically taken away along with numerous family members in the devastating war.

Tariq Thabet: A Beacon in Blockchain

Tariq Thabet, a Palestinian with an MBA from Michigan University, stood as a beacon in the world of blockchain. With a career spanning over 12 years, he championed projects that aimed to uplift the youth and startup culture in Gaza. Thabet's efforts were not confined to local initiatives; he led projects funded by prominent entities such as the World Bank, USAID, and UNRWA.

In his recent role at RampRate, an Impact-Focused Organization offering blockchain solutions, Tariq managed projects in AI Blockchain and DAOs. His contributions extended beyond business, as he actively worked with Gaza Sky Geeks Code Academy, leaving an indelible mark on the tech landscape.

Tey El Rjula, Founder and CEO of Fluus, expressed deep sorrow, noting Tariq's role as a key initiator of tech startups in Palestine. The loss reverberates through the tech community, where Tariq's impact was significant.

Mai Ubeid: Overcoming Challenges with Grace

Mai Ubeid, another luminary in the Gaza tech scene, faced and conquered challenges with grace. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age, she remained undeterred. As a leader at Gaza Sky Geeks Code Academy, Mai played a pivotal role in nurturing tech talent.

Fadi Ghandour, Managing Partner at Wamda Capital, remembered Mai as one of the greatest success stories from the Code Academy. Despite her physical limitations, Mai completed an internship with Google for Startups and became the youngest-ever hire for the tech team at UNICC/UNRWA.

The recent airstrike that claimed Mai's life, along with her family, raises poignant questions about the human cost of conflict. How many more promising lives must be lost before the world unites in a collective call to stop the violence?
